About 5waraj

"Culture is the process by which a person becomes all that they were created capable of being." Thomas Carlyle

"India's culture is eroding!"

"We are now in a culturally deprived era!"

We often hear such phrases but when clarification is sought as to what the term 'culture' implies, the answer is vague to say the least.

In ancient Indian traditional knowledge (based on Vedic Sanskrit texts), there are five distinct elements that constitute a culture.

They are:

  • Bhashā
  • Bhojana
  • Bhesha
  • Bhavana
  • Bhajana

Or in English:

  • Dialects
  • Diets
  • Dresses
  • Dwellings
  • Dances and Songs

In today's day and age, it is common to see people go astray from one or all of the 5 'D's, without appreciating the climatic sensitivity that gave rise to them to start with.

The result is an entire generation that wants to seek its cultural roots, and is willing to travel the seven seas for it, without realising that the answer lies within. Since it is also these 5 elements that come together and pave the path for the Sixth, unspoken element – Divinity or Bhagwana.

5waraj is an attempt at documenting, popularizing and eventually bringing people back in touch with their roots. It is not a new concept. It humbly bases itself on the wisdom of the ages and the teachings of great sages from the mother land – India and all the lands and people that have contributed to what it is today – at the edge of rediscovery; full of love; a little lost.
